No. At 9.25 on the Mohs scale, moissanite is the second hardest gemstone in common jewellery use. Nothing in normal daily life will scratch it.
Moissanite does not scratch easily. At 9.25 Mohs, only diamond (10) or other moissanite (9.25) can scratch it. Keys, coins, glass, countertops, metal surfaces — all softer than moissanite and cannot cause any scratch.
| Material | Mohs Hardness | Can It Scratch Moissanite? |
|---|---|---|
| Diamond | 10 | Yes — the only common material that can |
| Moissanite | 9.25 | By diamond or other moissanite only |
| Sapphire / Ruby | 9 | No |
| Steel tools | 6–7 | No |
| Glass | 5.5 | No |
| Keys | 5–6 | No |
| Coins | 3–4 | No |
Only diamond and other moissanite. In practical terms, this means:
| Gemstone | Mohs | Daily Wear Scratch Resistance |
|---|---|---|
| Diamond | 10 | Exceptional |
| Moissanite | 9.25 | Exceptional — second only to diamond |
| Sapphire / Ruby | 9 | Excellent |
| Topaz | 8 | Good |
| Emerald | 7.5 | Moderate — develops surface scratches over years |
| White Sapphire | 9 | Excellent hardness but low optical quality |
