Does moissanite get cloudy?

No — moissanite does not permanently cloud. The apparent cloudiness sometimes seen in moissanite rings is caused by product buildup on the stone surface, not by any change in the stone itself. A thorough clean restores full clarity.

01

The answer — no, not permanently

Moissanite does not permanently cloud. The silicon carbide crystal is chemically stable and does not develop internal cloudiness over time. The crystal structure, and the optical properties it creates, are permanent.

Apparent cloudiness in moissanite — a hazy, milky or foggy appearance — is almost always caused by a film of accumulated products on the stone surface. Lotion, skin oil, soap residue, perfume and other daily products accumulate on and under the stone, creating a surface coating that scatters light rather than reflecting it cleanly. The result looks like cloudiness but is a surface coating, not a stone change. It washes off.

“Every case of "cloudy moissanite" I have seen has been a dirty moissanite. Clean it properly and the clarity is completely restored.”

What causes apparent cloudiness

Several specific products and habits cause moissanite to appear cloudy.

Common causes of apparent cloudiness
  • Hand cream and body lotion — the most common cause. Lotion accumulates under the stone very efficiently. Apply lotion first, let it absorb, then put the ring on
  • Soap residue — soap that does not fully rinse away creates a film on the stone surface
  • Skin oil — natural skin oil deposits on the stone during wear and creates a gradual surface film
  • Sunscreen — accumulates under the stone effectively. Apply, absorb, wash hands before wearing the ring
  • Hairspray and perfume — alcohol-based products create surface film over time. Apply before putting the ring on
The oil slick effect — a related phenomenon
  • Some oils create a specific visible rainbow sheen on the moissanite surface — the oil slick effect. This is more dramatic than ordinary cloudiness and is covered in a dedicated guide. Like cloudiness, it is caused by surface coating and cleans off completely.

How to remove cloudiness completely

A thorough home clean removes all surface buildup and restores complete clarity. The process is simple.

  • 01
Prepare warm water with mild dish soap
A few drops in a small bowl of warm (not hot) water. No bleach, no ammonia-based cleaners, no toothpaste.
  • 02
    Soak for 15–20 minutes
A longer soak than usual for a cloudy stone — give the soapy water more time to break down the accumulated film.
  • 03
    Brush all surfaces thoroughly
Soft toothbrush. Top of the stone, underside, around the prongs, the inside of the setting where oil concentrates. Gentle but thorough circular motions.
  • 04
Rinse completely under warm running water
Every trace of soap must be removed. A soap film reduces clarity as much as the original buildup.
  • 05
Dry with a soft cloth and air dry
Pat dry. Let fully air dry before wearing.
If cloudiness persists after cleaning
  • If a thorough clean does not restore clarity, contact Fenora with a photograph. This is rare but can indicate a setting issue where buildup has hardened in an area not reached by normal cleaning
  • In very rare cases, certain chemical exposures (bleach, strong acids) can affect the surface of some gemstones — if the ring was exposed to these, contact Fenora for assessment

Cloudiness questions answered

'
'
My moissanite looks cloudy — is it ruined?
Almost certainly not. Clean it thoroughly using the method described above. The cloudiness is almost always surface buildup, which cleans off completely. The stone itself does not cloud permanently.
Can anything permanently cloud a moissanite?
Silicon carbide is chemically stable and does not cloud from normal environmental conditions. In theory, very strong acid exposure or other extreme chemical conditions could affect the surface — but these are not conditions encountered in daily life.
How do I prevent cloudiness?
Apply lotion and sunscreen before putting the ring on. Clean monthly. Remove the ring for activities involving heavy chemicals. These habits prevent the buildup that causes apparent cloudiness.
