Does moissanite lose its sparkle?

The stone itself will never permanently lose its sparkle. The optical properties of moissanite are fixed in the crystal structure. However, product buildup on the stone surface temporarily reduces brilliance — and a monthly clean restores it completely.

01

The stone itself — permanent

Moissanite cannot permanently lose its sparkle. The brilliance and fire are properties of the silicon carbide crystal structure — fixed in the atomic arrangement of the crystal. They do not change with time, wear or any normal environmental condition.

A moissanite that sparkles brilliantly today will sparkle identically in 50 years. The crystal does not age or degrade.

“The crystal structure is permanent. The optical properties follow from that structure. The stone you receive is the stone you will have in 30 years.”

What DOES reduce apparent sparkle — buildup

While the stone is permanent, apparent dullness can be caused by product accumulation on the stone surface — lotion, hand cream, soap residue and skin oil. This buildup blocks light from entering and returning through the stone, reducing apparent brilliance significantly.

This film is not damage. It washes off completely with a monthly home clean, restoring the original sparkle fully.

Products that reduce apparent sparkle most quickly
  • Hand cream and body lotion — the primary cause. Accumulates under the stone very efficiently
  • Soap residue — handwashing soap that does not fully rinse away
  • Skin oil — natural oil deposits on the stone surface during wear
  • The moissanite oil slick effect — a specific phenomenon covered in a separate guide

How to restore full sparkle — the monthly clean

A monthly home clean removes all surface buildup and restores the original sparkle completely.

  • 01
    Prepare warm soapy water
Warm water with a few drops of mild dish soap. Not hot water, not bleach, not toothpaste.
  • 02
    Soak for 10–15 minutes
Let the soapy water work on the buildup. The soak does most of the cleaning.
  • 03
Brush gently with a soft toothbrush
Focus on the underside of the stone and inside the prongs where product concentrates.
  • 04
    Rinse thoroughly under warm water
Remove all soap — a soapy film reduces sparkle almost as much as the original buildup.
  • 05
Dry with a soft lint-free cloth
Pat dry. Air dry fully before wearing.

Sparkle questions answered

'
'
My moissanite looks dull — has it lost its sparkle?
Almost certainly not permanently. A dull moissanite is almost always a coated moissanite. Try the monthly clean method. If the sparkle returns — which it almost always does — the problem was buildup, not the stone.
How often should I clean my moissanite ring?
Monthly for a thorough clean. A brief warm water rinse weekly helps prevent heavy buildup between monthly cleans.
Does moissanite need professional cleaning?
An annual professional ultrasonic clean is beneficial for removing buildup in areas a home brush cannot fully reach. Monthly home cleaning handles routine maintenance effectively.
