What shape is a diamond?

Diamonds come in 15 shapes at Fenora — from the classic round brilliant to the distinctive hexagone, Portuguese and lozenge. This guide introduces every shape, explains the difference between shape and cut, and helps buyers understand which shape might suit them.

01

Shape vs cut — two different things

Shape and cut describe different things. Shape refers to the outline of the diamond — round, oval, pear, emerald, cushion, marquise. Cut refers to how well the faceting has been done — whether the proportions produce maximum light performance. A round diamond can be cut excellently or poorly. An oval can be cut to show or hide its bow tie.

When people say "cut" in casual conversation they often mean shape. In the grading world, cut means quality of execution. The IGI grades round brilliant cut quality as Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair or Poor. For other shapes (oval, pear, cushion etc), cut quality is assessed through the proportions and visual performance rather than a single letter grade.

“Shape is the outline. Cut is the quality of how the stone was worked. Both matter. Always confirm Excellent cut for round brilliants. For fancy shapes, always view in video to assess the cut quality directly.”

How to choose a shape — the framework

  • 01
    Start with hand type
Does she have shorter fingers? Oval, pear, marquise and elongated cushion elongate and flatter. Longer fingers suit any shape. Wider hands suit shapes with visual width — oval, cushion, radiant.
  • 02
    Consider the aesthetic character
Classic and timeless: round. Romantic: oval or pear. Sophisticated: emerald or asscher. Dramatic: marquise. Extraordinary individual: hexagone, lozenge or Portuguese.
  • 03
    Brilliant or step cut?
Brilliant cuts (round, oval, cushion, pear) produce maximum sparkle. Step cuts (emerald, asscher) produce a sophisticated mirror-like depth. Different optical characters for different preferences.

Shape questions — answered

Are all 15 shapes available in lab grown diamond at Fenora?
Yes. All 15 shapes — round, oval, cushion, princess, emerald, radiant, pear, marquise, asscher, heart, Dutch marquise, hexagone, Portuguese, elongated cushion and lozenge — are available in IGI certified lab grown diamond at Fenora.
Do different shapes cost different amounts at the same carat weight?
Yes. Round brilliant diamonds typically cost a premium over fancy shapes at the same carat weight — more rough diamond is discarded to achieve a round outline. Elongated shapes (oval, pear, marquise) often offer the best apparent size per dollar because they cover more finger area per carat.
Can I mix shapes in a ring — for example, round centre with pear side stones?
Yes. Mixed shape configurations — particularly round or oval centre with pear side stones in a trilogy — are very popular at Fenora. Our design team advises on the best shape combinations for any given brief.
