Vintage and antique style engagement rings.

Vintage and antique style engagement rings draw from the design vocabulary of the great jewellery periods — Art Deco, Edwardian, Victorian and Art Nouveau. Each period has a distinct visual language. This guide explains what distinguishes each style, what makes a great vintage-inspired ring and how to choose between them.

01

Vintage inspired vs antique — the honest distinction

An antique ring is an original piece made in a historical period — genuinely old, with the wear and provenance that implies. A vintage inspired ring is a new ring designed in the aesthetic vocabulary of a historical period. Fenora makes vintage inspired rings — new pieces crafted to the highest current quality standards using the design language of historical periods.

The advantage of a vintage inspired ring over a genuine antique is significant: the stone is IGI certified (antique stones are rarely certified to modern grading standards), the metalwork is new (antique settings may have worn prongs and setting issues that require significant restoration) and the ring carries the Fenora lifetime manufacturing warranty.

Why vintage inspired at Fenora
  • IGI certified lab grown diamond — independently graded quality, not relying on the original cutter's description
  • New metalwork to current quality standards — prongs formed correctly, structural integrity throughout
  • Lifetime manufacturing warranty — not available on genuine antique pieces
  • The aesthetic of a historical period with the quality and reliability of a new ring
“A vintage inspired ring gives you the design vocabulary of the great jewellery periods without the uncertainty of an antique. The aesthetic is historical. The quality is current.”

The great jewellery periods — A design guide

Four distinct historical periods each produced a recognisable design vocabulary that informs vintage inspired ring design today.

Victorian (1837–1901)
Romantic, symbolic, warm
Yellow gold settings with rich decoration. Roses, hearts, bows, birds — highly symbolic motifs. Cluster settings with multiple stones. Warm and romantic character. The most emotionally expressive period of fine jewellery design. Rose-cut diamonds are period-authentic.
Edwardian (1901–1915)
Delicate, lace-like, refined
The finest and most technically demanding period of ring design. Platinum filigree openwork. Milgrain edging throughout. Garland and swag motifs. Very feminine and delicate. The period when platinum became the dominant fine jewellery metal.
Art Nouveau (1890–1910)
Organic, flowing, nature inspired
Overlaps with the Edwardian period in time but is a completely different aesthetic. Flowing organic lines, nature motifs — dragonflies, flowers, women with flowing hair. The ancestor of the modern nature inspired ring.
Art Deco (1920–1940)
Geometric, bold, contemporary-feeling
The most contemporary-feeling of the historical periods. Bold geometric forms, contrasting colours, step-cut stones. The only historical style that looks genuinely modern in 2026 as well as period-appropriate. Octagonal and rectangular halos, step-cut side stones, strong symmetry.
03

Art Deco style — the most contemporary historical period

Art Deco is the vintage period that feels most contemporary. Its geometric precision, bold symmetry and graphic confidence translate directly to modern design sensibility in a way that Victorian romance or Edwardian delicacy do not for every buyer.

Art Deco design elements in Fenora rings
  • Geometric halos — octagonal, hexagonal or square halos instead of circular. The most immediately Deco design element
  • Step-cut stones — emerald and Asscher cuts are the period-authentic shapes. Their open, mirror-like step facets align perfectly with Deco geometric sensibility
  • Milgrain throughout — the small bead detail along every edge is a period hallmark. Used extensively in Deco settings
  • Bold symmetry — Deco design is rigorously symmetrical. The left and right sides of the ring are mirror images
  • Contrasting colours — original Deco pieces often paired diamonds with sapphires, rubies or emeralds for graphic colour contrast. Available as a custom design option at Fenora
04

Edwardian style — the most delicate

Edwardian design is the most technically demanding of the vintage styles. True Edwardian filigree — the open lacework of fine platinum metalwork — requires exceptional craft skills and considerable time to execute correctly.

Edwardian design elements at Fenora
  • Filigree — fine openwork metalwork in the gallery and band. Ranges from very fine and lacework-like to more substantial open patterns. The defining Edwardian element
  • Milgrain edging — tiny metal beads along every edge of every metalwork element. Applied by hand, one bead at a time
  • Garland motifs — swag and garland design elements in the gallery and shoulders
  • Platinum setting — Edwardian rings are most period-authentic in platinum. The metal's strength allows finer metalwork than gold
  • Rose-cut diamonds as accent stones — the flat-based, domed rose-cut was the diamond cut of the early 20th century. Available as an accent element in Fenora Edwardian pieces
05

Victorian style — the most romantic

Victorian jewellery is the most emotionally expressive of any period. Symbolic motifs abound — forget-me-nots for faithful love, snakes consuming their own tails as a symbol of eternal love, stars, hearts, flowers. Every element carries meaning.

Victorian design elements at Fenora
  • Yellow gold settings — Victorian rings are most authentic in yellow gold. The warm metal suits the romantic, warm character of the period
  • Floral and botanical motifs — roses, vines, leaves, petals. The most direct ancestor of the modern nature inspired ring
  • Cluster settings — multiple diamonds arranged in a floral cluster, with a centre stone and a ring of surrounding stones. The Victorian alternative to the modern halo
  • Rose-cut centre stones — the domed, flat-based rose cut was the period diamond. Available as an IGI certified option for buyers who want the most period-authentic choice
  • Symbolic elements — any specific symbol with personal meaning can be incorporated into a custom Victorian inspired design

Vintage inspired questions — answered

Common questions about vintage and antique style rings.

How do I know if a vintage style ring will look genuinely period or like a costume version?
The difference between a genuine vintage inspired ring and a costume version is in the quality of the specific design details — the precision of the filigree, the evenness of the milgrain, the correctness of the proportions. Our design team designs from primary references to each period and executes the details to the correct standard. Generic vintage style rings in mass production are often recognisable by incorrectly scaled details and inconsistent execution.
Can I combine elements from different periods?
Yes — and some of the most interesting custom design briefs do exactly this. A ring with Art Deco geometry and Art Nouveau organic flowing elements is a legitimate and interesting design brief. The key is intentionality — knowing which elements you are drawing from which periods and why.
Are vintage style rings more expensive than contemporary styles?
It depends on the complexity of the detail. A simple vintage inspired ring with light milgrain detail is comparable to a contemporary ring of similar complexity. A ring with full Edwardian filigree throughout the gallery and band requires significantly more skilled craft time and is priced accordingly.
