Professional ring servicing explained.

Regular professional ring servicing is the single most important thing you can do to prevent stone loss and maintain the condition of your ring over a lifetime of wear. This guide explains exactly what a professional service involves, how often you need one, what the Fenora aftercare service includes and what happens during prong re-tipping and rhodium re-plating.

01

Why professional servicing matters

Home cleaning removes surface buildup and maintains brilliance. It does not — and cannot — assess the structural integrity of the setting. Only a professional with the right tools and magnification can check the condition of prong tips, the security of pavé stones, the integrity of solder joints and the overall structural health of the ring.

Prong tips wear gradually with daily use. The tip of a prong — the point of metal that holds the stone — is the thinnest, most exposed part of the ring. Through years of contact with surfaces and fabrics, prong tips thin and round. A prong that started as a pointed tip holding a stone securely can, after 5–10 years of daily wear, thin to the point where it no longer holds the stone reliably.

This process is gradual and invisible without magnification. Professional inspection catches the problem before the stone is at risk.

What professional servicing catches that home cleaning cannot
  • Prong tip wear — the gradual thinning that leads to stone loss if unchecked
  • Micro-cracks in solder joints — invisible without magnification
  • Pavé bead condition — tiny raised metal beads can gradually flatten or separate
  • Setting movement — any movement of the setting relative to the band
  • Stone security — a systematic check of every stone for any detectable movement
“The rings I see with stone loss almost always had a warning sign that was missed — a prong that was worn, a bead that had flattened. Professional inspection catches these things. It is genuinely worth doing.”

How frequently should you service your ring?

Servicing frequency depends on the setting type and how actively the ring is worn.

Every 6m
Halo, pave and multi-stone
Halo and pavé settings have many small stones held by fine prongs and tiny metal beads. Six-monthly inspection is the right interval for these setting styles.
Every 12m
Solitaire and bezel settings
A well-made solitaire or bezel setting has fewer components to check. Annual inspection is sufficient for most solitaire wearers with normal daily wear.
Immediately
If you notice anything unusual
A stone that rattles, appears raised or shifted. The ring catches on fabric unexpectedly. Stop wearing and have it inspected. Do not wait.
Setting-specific guidance
  • Round and oval solitaire — annual inspection. Check the prong tips specifically for roundness and wear
  • Emerald and Asscher cut — annual inspection. The four corner prongs are critical
  • Halo ring — every 6 months. The halo prongs are very fine and wear more quickly
  • Pave band — every 6 months. The metal beads holding pavé stones need systematic checking
  • Bezel setting — annual inspection. The bezel rim should be checked for even contact all the way around
  • Trilogy and multi-stone — every 6 months. Multiple stones means multiple settings to check

What happens during a professional service?

A professional ring service is a systematic assessment of every component, followed by any maintenance work required, followed by a polish and clean. This is what a full service involves.

  • 01
    Ultrasonic cleaning
The ring is placed in an ultrasonic cleaner that uses high-frequency sound waves to loosen and remove all buildup from inside the setting. This makes the subsequent inspection significantly more accurate.
  • 02
    Stone security check
Every stone is checked under 10x or higher magnification. A probe tests for any movement in each stone. Any stone with detectable movement requires attention before the ring is returned.
  • 03
    Prong tip inspection
Each prong tip is examined for wear, rounding or thinning. Prong tips worn below the safe threshold are flagged for re-tipping.
  • 04
    Structural inspection
All solder joins, the band structure, the gallery beneath the stone and all setting components are checked for cracks, separations or developing faults.
  • 05
    Maintenance work
Any identified issues are addressed — prong re-tipping, stone re-setting, solder repair. All work is confirmed before it is performed.
  • 06
    Polish and finish restoration
The ring is polished to restore the surface finish. White gold rings receive rhodium re-plating at this stage.
  • 07
    Final inspection
The ring is inspected again after all work is complete. Every stone is re-checked. The ring is cleaned and returned.

Prong Re-Tipping — the most common repair

Prong re-tipping is the process of adding new metal to a worn prong tip to restore its ability to hold the stone securely. It is the most common ring repair and one of the most important preventive maintenance procedures available.

Prong re-tipping — what to know
  • It is quick — re-tipping a prong is typically completed within a few days. Multiple prongs can be re-tipped in one service visit
  • It is inexpensive relative to stone replacement — re-tipping costs a fraction of replacing the stone the prong was holding
  • It does not affect the ring significantly — a well-performed re-tip is invisible in the finished ring
  • At Fenora — prong re-tipping required due to a manufacturing defect is covered under the lifetime manufacturing warranty. Re-tipping from normal wear over many years is a paid service
05

Rhodium Re-Plating for white gold rings

White gold rings are rhodium plated — a thin layer of rhodium applied to give white gold its characteristic bright white finish. Rhodium plating is not permanent. With daily wear it gradually wears away, revealing the slightly warmer yellow-white tone of the gold alloy beneath. This is completely normal.

Rhodium re-plating — what to know
  • When to re-plate — when you notice a yellowing on the underside or outer surface of the band. Typically takes 1–3 years depending on wear intensity
  • The process — the ring is cleaned, polished and then rhodium is deposited on the surface via electroplating. Takes a few days
  • The result — after re-plating, the ring looks exactly as it did on day one. Bright white and fresh
  • Frequency — most white gold rings benefit from re-plating every 1–3 years. Fenora includes the first re-plating in the ring aftercare service
