Frank answers to the questions men are too embarrassed to ask. No condescension, no jewellery-store fluff — just clear answers from people who fit thousands of bands.
If this is the first piece of jewellery you've ever bought for yourself — and it is, for most men — there are twenty questions you might be too embarrassed to ask. Here are the answers.
No condescension. No "trust me, I'm the expert." Just frank answers from people who've fitted thousands of men's bands.
A men's wedding band typically uses 8–15 grams of metal. At today's gold prices, that's $400–$900 in raw 18KT gold alone. Add platinum (twice as dense, three times the per-gram cost), and you're at $1,200+ in materials before anyone touches the metal. Add hand-finishing, casting, polishing, comfort-fit interior, and final QC — and the labour itself runs $300–$600. The retail you see is materials + labour + warranty + the cost of running a small atelier. We don't apologise for our prices, but we also don't mark up arbitrarily — our margins are tight on purpose.
The inside of the ring is slightly domed (curved outward) rather than flat. Means the band sits more comfortably on the finger, easier on/off over the knuckle, less moisture-trapping. Every Fenora men's band is comfort-fit. Read the sizing guide for more.
Watch on the non-dominant hand (left for most), wedding band on the ring finger of either hand depending on culture (left in most Western, right in many European/Indian/East Asian). Most men coordinate the metal: steel watch = white gold or platinum; gold watch = yellow or rose gold. If you wear a smartwatch, leather strap, or rubber sport — match neither, and the band can be anything.
Most men wear theirs every day, including showering, sleeping, and most activities. Most men don't wear theirs in the gym (impact damage), in the pool (chlorine), at work in heavy trades (compression risk), or in surgery. There's no "right answer" — comfort with the ring is the only metric that matters. See care guide.
Yes, slightly, in summer or sunny climates. The ring blocks UV from a strip of skin. Most men barely notice; some find it endearing. Slip the ring up to your knuckle for ten minutes during a beach day if you don't want it to develop.
Yes. Soap and water won't hurt any metal we sell. The only risk is dropping it down the drain, which is a real but rare event.
Resize within ±4 sizes (gold/platinum) is straightforward and free in your first 60 days, then $40–$120 for life. Tantalum can't be resized but we'll remake at material cost. Most men gain 0.5–1.5 sizes between 25 and 50; we resize about 30% of bands at least once over their lifetime.
No. Gold and platinum are non-magnetic and pass through scanners freely. Tantalum is denser but also doesn't trigger standard scanners. You can fly comfortably wearing any of our metals.
Choose platinum (95% pure, no nickel), tantalum (zero nickel), or 18KT yellow or rose gold (lowest alloy content of golds). Avoid 10KT and 14KT white gold, which contain the most nickel. About 10% of men have some nickel sensitivity; most don't notice unless wearing white gold daily.
If your ring is over $1,500, yes. Add it as a "scheduled item" on your home or contents insurance — typically $20–$60/year for full replacement coverage including loss, theft, and damage outside your home. We provide an appraisal certificate with every band over $1,500 specifically for this.
Show them the sample card before you commit. Or order two slightly different bands (one preferred, one backup) — yes, we'll do that for new clients, with the understanding that one will come back unworn for a partial refund. Better than getting it wrong.
Book a 30-minute Zoom call with Yash Chandpara or our design team. We'll show you the band on Yash Chandpara's hand (or we'll have a friend wear it on a similar size), at multiple angles, in multiple lighting. Free, zero pressure, no follow-up email.
Because every band is made to your specs, we don't offer free returns the way ready-to-wear retailers do. But: if you're unhappy with anything on our end (sizing off, finish wrong, engraving error, defect), we remake free of charge. If you've genuinely changed your mind, we'll discuss case-by-case — usually offer 50% credit toward a different ring or a full reimagining of the same band in a different metal.
Heavy question, but men ask it. Your wedding band stays with whoever you've left it to. We'll resize it for the new wearer at material cost only — even decades later. We've worked on bands originally made in the 1980s for grandsons inheriting them in 2026.
Yes. Most common: a partner buying for the groom, or an anniversary gift. We'll work with the gifter on sizing (we send the kit privately, the receiver thinks it's a sizing study for "research") and shipping is discreet. Engraving the inside is the most-requested gift detail.
The first-time buyer's biggest mistake is overthinking it. Pick the metal that feels right when you imagine wearing it for forty years. Pick the width that fits your hand. The rest is detail.
