How to read an IGI diamond certificate.

Your IGI certificate is the independent quality record for your specific diamond. This step-by-step guide walks through every section — what each field means, what to check when your ring arrives and how to verify your stone online.

01

Why the certificate matters — independent quality verification

The IGI certificate is the International Gemological Institute's independent assessment of your specific diamond. Not the seller's claim — the laboratory's finding. The graders who produced this certificate have no financial interest in the sale and assessed the stone against published, standardised criteria using calibrated instruments.

Every Fenora diamond has an IGI certificate. The quality grades — colour, clarity, cut, carat — are the IGI's measurements. This is why Yash Chandpara can say with confidence that every stone presented in a consultation is exactly what it is described as: the certificate is independent verification.

“The certificate is the IGI's finding about your specific stone. Not an estimate, not a category description — this stone, on this date, by these graders, using these instruments. Keep it safely.”
— Yash Chandpara, Founder

Step 1 — report number and online verification

The report number is the unique identifier linking the certificate to your specific diamond. It is printed at the top of the certificate and laser-inscribed on the girdle of the physical stone.

  • 01
Find the report number on the certificate
Usually 9–12 digits, prominently displayed at the top of the certificate.
  • 02
Locate the laser inscription on the stone girdle
Using a 10x loupe, examine the thin edge (girdle) of the diamond. The report number is laser-inscribed here in tiny text. Confirm it exactly matches the certificate.
  • 03
    Verify at igiworldwide.com
Enter the report number. The full certificate will display. Every field should exactly match your physical certificate. This confirms the certificate is genuine and the stone is what it claims to be.

Step 2 — the 4C quality grades

FieldWhat It ShowsWhat Fenora Provides
Carat WeightPrecise weight to 2 decimal places (0.01ct = 0.2mg)Confirmed match to order description
Colour GradeD through Z — one letter. D is most colourless.G minimum for white metals. H minimum for warm metals.
Clarity GradeFlawless through I3. What the grader sees under 10x.VS2 as standard. SI1 confirmed eye-clean also available.
Cut GradeExcellent through Poor. Round brilliants only.Excellent — always. No exceptions for centre stones.
PolishExcellent through Poor. Surface finish quality.Excellent.
SymmetryExcellent through Poor. Facet precision.Excellent.
04

Step 3 — measurements and proportions

The measurements section lists the physical dimensions of the stone and, for round brilliants, the key proportion percentages.

What to check
  • Measurements — length x width x depth in millimetres. Confirms the physical size and calculates the carat weight
  • Table % — should be 54–62% for Excellent cut round brilliants
  • Depth % — should be 59–62.5% for Excellent cut
  • Pavilion angle — should be 40.6–41.8°. The most critical single proportion for light performance
  • Girdle thickness — should be Thin to Slightly Thick. Very thin risks chipping; very thick hides carat weight
05

Step 4 — fluorescence and clarity plot

Fluorescence notation
  • States None, Faint, Medium, Strong or Very Strong, plus colour (usually Blue)
  • Most Fenora diamonds: None or Faint. Yash Chandpara discusses any Medium or stronger stone specifically
Clarity plot
  • Diagrams showing every inclusion — position and type
  • Two views: from above (top) and from the side
  • Red symbols: internal inclusions. Green: surface blemishes
  • The pattern is unique to your stone — the fingerprint linking the physical diamond to its certificate

Certificate questions — answered

What if my report number does not appear on igiworldwide.com?
Contact Fenora immediately. This would be extremely unusual for any certified Fenora diamond and would be investigated immediately. Every Fenora diamond is IGI certified prior to delivery.
What if my certificate is lost or damaged?
Contact Fenora. IGI issues replacement certificates for a modest administration fee. Fenora retains order documentation that records the report number.
Do I need to do anything with the certificate?
Store it safely with important documents. It is required for jewellery insurance valuation and for any future Fenora aftercare, resize or upgrade service. Keep the physical certificate and photograph it for a backup.
