IGI and GIA are the two most internationally recognised independent diamond grading laboratories. Both produce valid, respected certificates. This guide explains what each laboratory is, how their standards compare and why Fenora uses IGI.
The International Gemological Institute (IGI) and the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) are both independent gemological laboratories that grade diamonds against published, standardised quality criteria. Neither is affiliated with any diamond retailer or manufacturer — their grading is independent of any commercial interest in the stones they grade.
Both use the same fundamental grading framework: the 4Cs — Cut, Colour, Clarity and Carat weight — developed by GIA in the 1950s and now the universal standard for diamond quality communication. Both laboratories train their graders to the same grading criteria. Both use calibrated instruments.
GIA — the Gemological Institute of America — was founded in 1931 and developed the modern 4C diamond grading system in the 1950s. It is the institution that created the standardised language of diamond quality. GIA is widely regarded as the most conservative and consistent grader — it is the reference standard against which other laboratories are measured.
IGI — the International Gemological Institute — was founded in Antwerp in 1975. It is the largest independent gemological institute in the world by certificate volume, with laboratory locations across Europe, North America, India and Asia. IGI developed specific expertise in lab grown diamond grading as the lab grown market grew significantly from the 2010s.
