How to choose the right chain length.

Chain length determines where a pendant sits on the body and how a necklace reads with different necklines, body types and outfits. This guide explains every standard chain length and helps you choose the right one for your pendant and your style.

01

Why chain length matters

The same pendant on a 16-inch chain and on a 22-inch chain looks like a completely different piece of jewellery. The length determines whether the pendant sits at the collarbone, the chest or the stomach — three very different visual positions that each work better with different necklines, different outfits and different occasions.

Chain length is also a deeply personal preference. Some women always wear necklaces at collarbone level. Others prefer the pendant lower on the chest. Some love layering multiple lengths. Understanding what each length looks like in practice makes the choice much easier.

“The right chain length is the one where the pendant sits where you feel it looks best. That depends on your neckline preferences, your body proportions and your personal aesthetic. I show every client the options on screen before we confirm any chain length.”

Tall18–24 inchesLonger lengths are proportionally appropriate on a taller frameCan go longer than shorter frames while remaining proportional
Full bust18–22 inchesThe 16-inch collarbone length draws attention to the bust width. Longer lengths create a downward line that is more flattering18–20 inches is the most flattering range

Chain length for layering

Layering multiple necklaces at different lengths is one of the most popular fine jewellery trends. For layering to look intentional rather than accidental, each necklace should be visually distinct and the lengths should be spaced so they do not overlap or tangle.

Layering length combinations that work well
  • 16 + 18 + 22 inches — three layers with clear visual separation. Classic layering combination
  • 16 + 20 inches — two layers. Simple and effective
  • 14 + 18 + 24 inches — three distinct levels. Fashion-forward layering
  • Rule of thumb — minimum 2-inch difference between layers. Less than 2 inches and the chains tangle; 2+ inches and they sit separately
What to layer
  • A diamond pendant at 16 inches + a simple chain at 20 inches + a longer chain at 24 inches
  • A tennis necklace at 16 inches + a simple pendant at 20 inches — the diamond continuity of the tennis necklace at collarbone level with a single stone hanging below it

Chain length questions — answered

What is the most popular chain length at Fenora?
18 inches — the princess length — is the most popular. It is the most versatile length, sitting just below the collarbone in a position that works with most necklines and most body types.
Can I get a chain in a custom length?
Yes. Fenora makes chains in any length. If 18 inches is too short but 20 inches is too long, a 19-inch chain is available. Contact Fenora to discuss.
Can I change the chain length of an existing Fenora pendant?
Yes — the chain can be exchanged for a different length through the Fenora aftercare service. Contact Fenora to discuss the chain exchange.
