Guide to fine chains.

A fine chain is both a pendant carrier and a jewellery piece in its own right. The right chain enhances every pendant it holds and can be worn alone for the most minimal and elegant of looks. This guide covers every chain style available at Fenora — what each looks like, how each wears and how to choose.

01

Why the chain matters as much as the pendant

Most buyers choose their pendant first and their chain second — treating the chain as merely functional. This is a mistake. The chain significantly affects how a pendant reads in wear. A delicate 0.8mm cable chain makes a diamond solitaire look floating and ethereal. The same pendant on a substantial 2.0mm curb chain looks grounded and confident. Two completely different characters from the same stone.

Chains can also be worn alone — no pendant — as a piece of fine jewellery in their own right. A single fine chain at the collarbone is one of the most minimal and elegant jewellery choices available. A layered set of different chain styles at different lengths is a major contemporary styling choice.

“The chain is not an afterthought — it is half of the necklace. I spend as much time on chain selection with clients as on the pendant itself. The combination is the piece, not just the stone.”

Chain styles at Fenora — every option

Cable Chain
The classic — round linked ovals
The most classic and most widely used chain style. Round or oval links connected alternately at 90° angles. Very flexible, drapes beautifully, works with any pendant. Available in 0.8mm (delicate) to 2.0mm (substantial) width.
Box Chain
Square links — clean and geometric
Square links connected end to end. A clean, architectural chain that sits flat against the skin. Heavier and more structured than cable. Suits geometric pendants particularly well. Very durable.
Trace Chain
Very fine cable — minimal and ethereal
An extremely fine cable chain — typically 0.6–0.8mm. The most delicate option. The pendant appears to float on the skin. Best with smaller, lighter pendants. The most minimal aesthetic.
Curb Chain
Flat links — substantial and classic
Oval links twisted so they lie flat. The individual links are visible. A substantial, confident chain style. Popular for men's jewellery and for buyers who want a chain with its own visual character.
Figaro Chain
Alternating link lengths — Italian classic
A pattern of alternating link sizes: typically one longer link followed by two or three shorter links. A classic Italian chain style. More visual interest than plain cable or box chain.
Singapore Chain
Twisted spiral — maximum sparkle
A twisted, spiral chain that creates maximum light interaction. The chain itself catches and reflects light from all angles. One of the most brilliant chain styles available.

Wearing a chain alone — the minimal approach

A fine chain worn alone — no pendant — is one of the most elegant and contemporary fine jewellery choices. It adds the quality and presence of fine metal at the collarbone without any additional visual element.

Chain-alone styling
  • A single 1.5–2.0mm cable or box chain in yellow gold at the collarbone is a classic minimal look
  • Layering two or three different chain styles at different lengths — with no pendants — creates texture and visual interest
  • A fine chain alone works particularly well with high necklines (turtleneck, crew neck) where a pendant would be hidden or compete with the fabric

Chain questions — answered

What chain is most popular at Fenora?
A 1.0–1.2mm cable chain in yellow gold or white gold at 18 inches is the most common pendant chain. For chains worn alone, a 1.5mm box chain is very popular.
How do I know which chain to choose for my pendant?
The pendant weight and the pendant character should guide the chain choice. A heavy pendant (2.0ct+) needs a substantial chain (1.5mm+) to support it properly and look proportional. A very delicate small pendant suits a fine trace chain.
Can I buy just the chain without a pendant?
Yes. Fenora sells chains separately from pendants. Contact Fenora to discuss chain styles, widths and lengths.
