Diamond clarity explained.

Clarity is the fourth C — a measure of the presence, size, number and visibility of inclusions in a diamond. This guide explains every clarity grade, what inclusions are, what eye-clean means in practice and how to choose the right clarity grade for your specific stone and budget.

01

What diamond clarity measures

Clarity describes the presence of inclusions (internal characteristics) and blemishes (surface characteristics) in a diamond. These form during the crystal growth process — geological conditions produce specific types of inclusions; laboratory growth produces different types. Both create characteristics that the IGI grades on its clarity scale.

The key insight for buyers: the clarity grade on the certificate describes what the grader sees under 10x magnification. For most engagement ring buyers, the practical question is simpler: can you see any inclusions with the naked eye in normal conditions? This is the "eye-clean" standard.

“The practical clarity question is not what grade appears on the certificate. It is: can you see anything with your naked eye in normal conditions? VS2 is reliably eye-clean in all conditions. SI1 often is — but needs individual confirmation. Below SI1, visible inclusions become a real risk.”

Why VS2 is the Fenora standard

VS2 is the sweet spot between quality and value for most buyers. At VS2, inclusions are difficult to see even under 10x magnification — they are completely invisible to the naked eye in all normal conditions. The visual result is identical to FL or IF. The price advantage over VVS and FL grades is meaningful.

VS2 in practice
  • Eye-clean in all normal viewing conditions — direct sunlight, indoor lighting, photography
  • Inclusions only visible under 10x magnification to a trained grader
  • Significantly less expensive than VVS2 or VS1 for identical visual appearance in a ring setting
  • Yash Chandpara confirms every VS2 stone is eye-clean before presenting it in a consultation

Clarity and cut style — step cuts vs brilliant cuts

Clarity requirements differ significantly between step-cut and brilliant-cut diamonds.

Cut StyleClarity RequirementWhy
Brilliant cut (round, oval, pear, cushion)VS2 or confirmed SI1Brilliant faceting breaks up inclusions — a small inclusion is much less visible in brilliant cut than in step cut
Step cut (emerald, asscher)VS1 or VS2 minimum — SI1 rarely appropriateOpen, mirror-like facets make inclusions more visible than in brilliant cuts. The same SI1 inclusion that is invisible in round will be clearly visible in emerald cut

Clarity questions — answered

Is Flawless worth the premium?
In a ring setting in daily wear, Flawless looks identical to VS2. No observer will see the difference. The premium for Flawless is a premium for the certificate grade — not for a visible quality difference. VS2 is the more efficient allocation of budget.
Can I see my VS2 inclusions in the ring?
No. VS2 inclusions are visible only under 10x magnification. In a ring setting, under any normal lighting condition including direct sunlight, a VS2 stone looks completely clean.
My stone is SI1 — is that a problem?
Not if Yash Chandpara confirmed it is eye-clean. SI1 can be eye-clean in brilliant cuts — the faceting hides the inclusions effectively. Yash Chandpara assesses every SI1 stone in video specifically for eye-clean status before presenting it.
