Moissanite rings — an overview.

Everything you need to know about moissanite engagement rings in one place. The material, the optical properties, the settings, the metals, the price, the care. A complete picture before you decide.

01

Moissanite at a glance — the key facts

Moissanite is silicon carbide — a naturally occurring mineral first discovered in a meteorite crater in 1893. Every moissanite used in jewellery today is laboratory grown. It is the second hardest gemstone in common jewellery use at 9.25 on the Mohs scale, behind only diamond at 10.

It is not a diamond. It is not a diamond simulant in the sense of being an imitation — it is a genuine crystalline gemstone with its own distinct properties. What makes it relevant as an engagement ring stone is its combination of exceptional optical performance, very high hardness and a price point significantly below both lab grown and mined diamonds.

Moissanite key facts
  • Material — silicon carbide (SiC). Not diamond (pure carbon)
  • Mohs hardness — 9.25. Diamond is 10. Moissanite is harder than sapphire, ruby, emerald
  • Refractive index — 2.65–2.69, higher than diamond (2.42). More light return
  • Fire (dispersion) — 0.104, approximately 2.4x more than diamond (0.044)
  • Price — typically 90–95% less expensive than a lab grown diamond of equivalent visible size
  • Origin — laboratory grown. All jewellery moissanite is synthetic silicon carbide
“Moissanite is not trying to be diamond. It is its own material with its own optical character. Understanding that distinction makes the buying decision much clearer.”

Moissanite ring styles — what is available

Moissanite can be set in every engagement ring style available for diamond. The setting styles, metals and design options are identical — the only difference is the centre stone.

Solitaire
Classic — stone does everything
A moissanite solitaire lets the exceptional brilliance and fire of the stone lead. Round, oval and cushion moissanite solitaires are the most popular configurations. The high fire of moissanite is particularly visible in a solitaire setting where nothing competes with the stone.
Halo
Maximum visual impact
A halo of smaller lab grown diamonds or moissanite surrounding a moissanite centre stone amplifies the visual size significantly. The combination of a moissanite centre and a diamond halo is a popular choice — the diamond halo adds sparkle without the full cost of a diamond centre stone.
Nature Inspired
Organic and personal
Moissanite set in vine, leaf and floral settings — designed by our design team. The warm optical character of moissanite suits nature inspired designs particularly well, especially in rose gold or yellow gold settings.
Vintage Inspired
Historical aesthetic
Moissanite in Art Deco, Edwardian or Victorian settings. The high fire of moissanite suits the ornate character of vintage designs where multiple light-catching elements amplify the overall sparkle.
Custom Design
Designed from your brief
Every moissanite ring at Fenora is made to order. Custom moissanite designs follow exactly the same process as diamond custom rings — Our design team works from your reference images and brief.
Toi et Moi
Two stones
A moissanite toi et moi — two stones side by side — is a distinctive choice. Moissanite and lab grown diamond in the same toi et moi is one of the most popular combinations at Fenora.

Moissanite sizes — what each size looks like

Moissanite is sold by millimetre diameter rather than carat weight. This is because silicon carbide has a different density to diamond — a moissanite of the same millimetre dimensions as a diamond weighs approximately 10% less. The size comparison below uses the millimetre diameter that corresponds to each approximate diamond carat equivalent.

Moissanite DiameterApproximate Diamond EquivalentWhat It Looks Like on the Hand
5.0mm0.50ct equivalentDelicate — suits fine bands and minimalist settings
6.0mm0.75ct equivalentClassic — the most popular starting size for everyday rings
6.5mm1.00ct equivalentBalanced — prominent without being overwhelming on most hands
7.0mm1.25ct equivalentA clear statement — noticeable and beautiful from across a room
7.5mm1.50ct equivalentVery striking — suits larger hands or buyers who want presence
8.0mm2.00ct equivalentBold and dramatic — very prominent on the hand
9.0mm2.50ct equivalentStatement — the choice for maximum visual impact
10.0mm3.00ct+ equivalentExceptional presence — very large on any hand

Moissanite metals — which works best

Every metal available for diamond rings is available for moissanite rings at Fenora. The metal choice affects how the moissanite's colour and fire read in the setting.

Metal recommendations for moissanite
  • White gold and platinum — the most popular choice. The cool white metal complements colourless moissanite and makes the fire appear more vivid by contrast. The most common moissanite ring configuration
  • Yellow gold — warm and distinctive. The warm metal makes colourless moissanite appear slightly warmer, which some buyers love. The combination of yellow gold and moissanite has a rich, vintage character
  • Rose gold — romantic and warm. The pink tone of rose gold creates a beautiful contrast with the colourless white of the moissanite. Nature inspired moissanite rings particularly suit rose gold
05

Moissanite price — what to expect

Moissanite is significantly less expensive than both lab grown and mined diamonds at equivalent visible sizes. This is the primary reason buyers choose it — a moissanite ring provides a large, optically impressive stone for a fraction of the cost of a diamond ring of the same visual size.

Visible SizeLab Grown Diamond (approx.)Moissanite (approx.)Saving
1.00ct equivalent$1,500–2,500$150–300~90%
1.50ct equivalent$2,500–4,000$250–450~90%
2.00ct equivalent$4,000–7,000$350–600~90–92%
3.00ct equivalent$8,000–15,000$500–900~93–95%
What the price difference means
  • A moissanite ring allows buyers to choose a significantly larger stone for any given budget than a diamond ring
  • The saving can go toward a more elaborate setting, higher-quality metal or other jewellery
  • For buyers with a tight budget who want a visually impressive ring, moissanite delivers more size per dollar than any other genuine gemstone option
06

Moissanite care — what your ring needs

Moissanite care is straightforward and almost identical to diamond ring care. The stone is extremely hard and durable. The main care considerations are the same as any fine jewellery ring.

Moissanite ring care
  • Clean monthly with warm water, mild dish soap and a soft brush. Pay particular attention to beneath the stone where lotion and oil accumulate. Moissanite is prone to the oil slick effect (described in a separate guide) from product buildup
  • Avoid bleach and chlorine-based cleaners — these affect the gold setting, not the stone
  • Remove for heavy exercise, gardening, swimming and chemical cleaning — the same advice as any fine jewellery ring
  • Professional inspection every 6–12 months — prong tips, setting security and stone condition
07

Is moissanite right for you? — An honest assessment

Moissanite is the right choice for some buyers and not for others. This honest framework helps identify which category you fall into.

Moissanite is the right choice when
  • Budget is the primary constraint and size matters — moissanite delivers the most visible size per dollar of any genuine gemstone
  • The buyer is comfortable with the optical differences (more fire, potential oil slick) and values them as features rather than seeing them as compromises
  • The recipient understands and is happy with moissanite — there is no point in a surprise moissanite ring if the recipient specifically wanted a diamond
Moissanite may not be the right choice when
  • The recipient specifically values the idea of a diamond — its material, its rarity, what it represents. No amount of visual similarity will satisfy this if the material matters
  • The budget can stretch to a lab grown diamond. A 0.8ct lab grown diamond will look different to a 2ct moissanite — more subtle, less fire — but it is a diamond, and for many buyers that distinction matters
