From 2mm slim to 8mm bold — how band width changes how a ring looks, fits, and feels every day.
Width is the single most underestimated decision in choosing a wedding band. Most men spend hours debating metals and finishes, then pick a width in thirty seconds — usually whatever the jeweller hands them first. That's a mistake. Width changes everything.
A 4mm band reads as refined and modern. The same metal, same finish, in 7mm reads as substantial and confident. Width is what your hand actually feels when you reach for a coffee, type at a keyboard, grip the steering wheel. It's not a detail — it's the foundation of how the ring will live with you.
This guide walks through every increment from 2mm to 8mm+, with real-world guidance on which fits which finger size, profession, and aesthetic. Read it before you click a width button on the product page.
The full width spectrum
All Available Widths · Side by Side
2mm Ultra-Slim
Almost a wire. Often paired with a heavier engagement ring or a second stack band. Rare for men's solo wedding rings.
3mm Refined
Modern, European feel. Disappears under a watch strap. Best for slim hands or layered with a vintage band on the same finger.
4mm Slim Classic
The gateway width for men with smaller hands or office-professional preferences. Catches light without dominating the finger.
5mm Standard
The default choice. Balanced for most hand sizes and finger lengths. Reads as confident without being loud. Pairs beautifully with most engagement rings.
6mm Substantial
Where men's bands get truly masculine. Hammered and brushed finishes shine here because there's surface area to display. Standard for hands above 8.5 ring size.
7mm Bold
A statement ring. Reads as intentional, confident, no apologies. Best for men with longer fingers or who want the band to be visible from across a room.
8mm+ Statement
For the man with substantial hands, a strong watch presence, or a deliberate aesthetic. Best paired with a hammered or two-tone finish — plain at this width can feel heavy.
How hand size changes everything
Width and hand size are inversely related. A 5mm band on a size-9 finger reads as bold; the same 5mm on a size-13 finger reads as understated. Most men's wedding band guides ignore this. We don't.
A Field Guide
If your ring size is...
Size 7 – 9
Smaller hands. 3mm – 5mm reads best. 6mm and above will feel chunky on the finger.
Size 9 – 11
The most common range. 4mm – 6mm is the sweet spot. Pretty much any width works here.
Size 11 – 14+
Larger hands. 5mm – 8mm. Anything narrower than 5mm starts to look insubstantial against your finger.
Width and profession
Your job matters. Not because we're going to dictate what you wear — but because a width that's beautiful on display is a different beast when you're using it 12 hours a day.

Recommended Width
Why
Trade / Manual labour
5mm – 6mm
Wide enough to feel substantial; narrow enough not to catch on equipment. Pair with hammered for hidden wear.
Office / Professional
4mm – 5mm
Refined, doesn't dominate at a keyboard, sits cleanly under a shirt cuff.
Athletic / Outdoor
4mm – 5mm + comfort fit
Lighter weight and tighter profile. Won't shift during workouts or knock against gear.
Surgeon / Healthcare
3mm – 4mm
Slimmer, easier under gloves. Many surgeons swap to silicone at work and wear precious bands off-duty.
Creative / Style-led
6mm – 8mm
Width as expression. Pair with hammered, two-tone, or hidden-stone for a real signature piece.
The quick math: visual presence
+1mm
Width Increase
Adds roughly 25% more visual presence, depending on finger length.
25%
Weight Difference
A 6mm band typically weighs 25–30% more than a 5mm in the same metal.

Widths to Try
When in doubt, order our free sample card with three widths — try them on your hand.
If your fiancée's engagement ring is delicate, your wedding band probably shouldn't be 8mm. Width is a coordination decision, not a personal one.

Our honest recommendation
If you've read this far and still aren't sure, here's our default suggestion based on nine years of fitting men's bands: start at 5mm. It's where most men land, it photographs well, it pairs with most engagement rings, and it'll never feel like the wrong choice in ten years.
If you genuinely want bolder, go to 6mm — but commit. Don't compromise at 5.5mm. The half-step rarely reads visually different and just makes resizing more complicated later.
And if you're in any doubt at all, order our free sample card. We'll post you 1-inch resin samples of every width in your chosen metal, free of charge, anywhere in Australia. Try them on, leave them on for an hour, type at your keyboard, drive your car. Then decide.
