Guide to diamond stud earrings.

Diamond stud earrings are the most versatile piece of fine jewellery a woman can own. They work with every outfit, every occasion and every other piece of jewellery. This guide covers every aspect of choosing diamond studs — stone quality, setting style, size, metal and how to wear them.

01

Why diamond studs are the essential fine jewellery piece

Diamond stud earrings are the most universally worn fine jewellery piece. They work with casual denim and a white shirt. They work with a formal evening gown. They work in a meeting room, at a wedding, at the beach. No other fine jewellery piece has this range. If a woman owns one piece of fine jewellery beyond her engagement ring, it should be diamond stud earrings.

At Fenora, diamond stud earrings are made with the same IGI certified lab grown diamonds as every engagement ring — the same quality standards, the same 18KT recycled gold or platinum settings, the same craftsmanship. A Fenora diamond stud is a genuine fine jewellery piece, not a fashion accessory.

“Diamond studs are the most useful piece of jewellery I recommend. They elevate everything, work everywhere and last forever. If a client asks me what to buy first for a jewellery wardrobe, the answer is always diamond studs.”

Diamond stud size guide — what each size looks like

Stud earring size is described in total carat weight — the combined weight of both stones. A 1ct total weight (TW) stud set has two stones of 0.50ct each.

Total Carat WeightEach StoneDiameter EachVisual CharacterBest For

Diamond quality for studs — what matters most

Stud earring diamonds are viewed from further away than ring diamonds — typically at arm's length and in conversation. This changes the quality priorities significantly.

Quality priorities for stud earrings
  • Cut quality first — as always, cut determines how the diamond performs with light. Excellent cut for round brilliant studs is non-negotiable. A well-cut stud catches and returns light from across a room
  • Colour: G-H is the sweet spot — at earring distance, the difference between D and H colour is completely invisible. G-H gives the appearance of colourless with significant budget efficiency
  • Clarity: VS2 to SI1 — stud diamonds are viewed at arm's length. No one will see SI1 inclusions in your earrings. VS2 is safe and reliable; confirmed eye-clean SI1 is excellent value
  • Round brilliant is the right shape for studs — the round brilliant produces maximum brilliance from every viewing angle. This matters enormously in earrings which are seen from all sides as the wearer moves

Stud earring settings — prong, bezel and martini

4-Prong Classic
The most popular
Four prongs hold the diamond — the most light enters the stone from all angles. Maximum brilliance. The standard setting for diamond studs. Available in push-back or screw-back fastening.
6-Prong
Maximum security
Six prongs for additional stone security. Slightly more metal visible around the diamond but the stone is very securely held. Suits buyers who are active or concerned about stone security.
Martini / Basket
Low profile — sits close to the ear
The stone sits in a low, conical basket setting that minimises the height of the earring from the ear. Very comfortable and sits cleanly against the lobe. Less light enters from below than in taller prong settings.
Bezel
Modern and secure
A continuous metal rim around the diamond. Clean, contemporary look. Maximum protection. Less light enters from the side than in prong settings — slightly less brilliant but very modern in aesthetic.
Halo Stud
Amplified size — more presence
A border of smaller diamonds around the centre stone. The same visual amplification effect as a halo engagement ring. A 0.50ct TW centre looks like a 1.0ct+ stone visually.
Hidden Halo Stud
Surprise sparkle from below
Smaller diamonds set underneath the main stone — visible from certain angles and in certain lighting but not immediately obvious. A sophisticated, understated design detail.

Back fastening — Push-Back vs Screw-Back

Fastening TypeHow It WorksBest ForSecurity Level
Push-back (butterfly)A butterfly-shaped clasp that pushes onto the post and holds by frictionMost popular. Easy on and off for daily wearGood — but can loosen over time
Screw-backA threaded post that screws into a threaded back — requires a twisting motion to secureMost secure option. Recommended for larger, more valuable studsExcellent — most secure fastening available
Locking push-backA push-back with an additional locking mechanism — press to releaseGood security with easier operation than screw-backVery good
Fastening recommendation by size
  • For studs under 0.50ct TW: push-back is appropriate and most convenient
  • For studs 0.50ct TW and above: screw-back strongly recommended. The higher value justifies the additional security

Caring for diamond stud earrings

Stud earring care
  • Weekly clean — warm water, mild dish soap, soft brush. Pay attention to the post and the inside of the butterfly back where product and skin cell buildup accumulates. Rinse thoroughly. Dry with a soft cloth
  • Check the backs regularly — butterfly backs can loosen from the post over time. Check that the back sits firmly on the post at the widest point every few weeks
  • Remove before swimming, sleeping and exercise — particularly for push-back fastening where movement can gradually loosen the back
  • Store in a fabric-lined box — not loose in a jewellery dish where the earrings can be scratched by other pieces
What is the most popular diamond stud size?
At Fenora, 1.00ct TW (0.50ct each stone) is the most popular overall. It is the size that provides clear, noticeable presence without being a statement piece — versatile for everyday wear and occasions.
Should stud earrings match the metal of the engagement ring?
Ideally yes — matching metals create a cohesive jewellery wardrobe. If the engagement ring is white gold, white gold studs make the most sense. That said, yellow gold studs are a classic choice regardless of ring metal for many buyers.
Can I get different shaped diamonds in stud earrings?
Yes — round brilliant is the most popular and most versatile for studs, but oval, cushion and pear studs are available at Fenora. Non-round studs tend to look best in bezel or tension settings that show the shape clearly.
