Beginner's guide to choosing wedding rings.

Never bought a wedding ring before? This guide starts from zero. What a wedding ring actually is, what makes a good one, the vocabulary you need to navigate the process and the six decisions every buyer makes — in the right order.

01

What a wedding ring actually is

A wedding ring is a band of metal — plain or set with diamonds — worn on the ring finger to symbolise marriage. Unlike an engagement ring, which is a gift from one partner to the other, wedding rings are typically chosen together and exchanged during the wedding ceremony.

The wedding ring is the ring that never comes off. Not for work, not for the gym, not because you forgot to put it on. It becomes a permanent part of how you present yourself to the world. This is why comfort, durability and genuine personal resonance matter more than for any other piece of jewellery.

The basics
  • A wedding ring is typically a plain or diamond-set band — simpler than an engagement ring
  • Both partners typically wear one — traditionally identical, increasingly personalised
  • Exchanged during the wedding ceremony, worn on the left hand ring finger (in most Western traditions)
  • The engagement ring is usually worn alongside the wedding ring after the wedding

Six decisions every wedding ring buyer makes — in the right order

Every wedding ring choice involves the same six decisions. Making them in the right order produces better outcomes than approaching them in random order.

01 — Style
Plain, diamond or decorated
The first and most personal decision. Plain band (no stones), diamond band (pavé, channel or eternity) or decorated plain (milgrain, engraving). This is fundamentally about how much jewellery you want on your hand every day.
02 — Metal
Yellow, white, rose gold or platinum
The metal should match the engagement ring for a cohesive look — or deliberately contrast for a contemporary mixed-metal style. 18KT gold and platinum are the fine jewellery standards.
03 — Width
How wide the band is
1.5–4mm for women. 4–8mm for men. Width affects proportion on the hand and how the ring pairs with the engagement ring. The most popular women's width is 2.0–2.5mm.
04 — Profile
The inner shape of the band
Flat profile or comfort fit (rounded inside). For any band 3mm or wider, comfort fit makes a significant difference to how the ring feels after a year of daily wear.
05 — Pairing
How it sits with the engagement ring
The band should sit flush alongside the engagement ring without a gap. Some engagement ring profiles require a curved or contoured wedding band. Confirm the pairing before ordering.
06 — Budget
How much to spend
Wedding bands cost significantly less than engagement rings — typically 10–25% of the engagement ring budget. A beautiful, quality Fenora wedding band starts from approximately $800–1,200.
03

The vocabulary you need — terms explained

A quick reference for the terminology you will encounter when choosing a wedding ring.

TermWhat It Means
PavéSmall diamonds set closely together across the band surface. Creates continuous sparkle.
Channel setDiamonds set in a groove between two metal walls. Very secure. No individual prongs.
Half eternityDiamonds set across the top half of the band — the visible portion when worn.
Full eternityDiamonds all the way around the entire band. Cannot be conventionally resized.
Comfort fitA band with a slightly rounded inner surface. Significantly more comfortable for daily wear.
MilgrainTiny metal beads along the edge of the band. A decorative detail associated with vintage styles.
Contoured/curved bandA band shaped to follow the profile of the engagement ring setting — sits flush without a gap.
ProfileThe cross-sectional shape of the band — flat, D-shape, court or knife edge.
Carat (metal)The purity of gold. 18KT = 75% pure gold. The fine jewellery standard.
Rhodium platingA bright white coating applied to white gold. Wears gradually and requires periodic re-plating.
04

Diamond or plain — deciding for yourself

The choice between a diamond wedding band and a plain metal band is the most personal decision in the process. There is no universally right answer.

Choose a plain band if
  • You prefer minimal jewellery and want the engagement ring to remain the focus
  • You have a very active lifestyle and want a ring you can always wear
  • You want the lowest possible maintenance
  • The engagement ring is already heavily set (halo, pavé) and you do not want to add more stone
Choose a diamond band if
  • You love the idea of continuous sparkle when the two rings are worn together
  • Your engagement ring is a relatively plain solitaire and you want the set to have more combined presence
  • You want the wedding ring to be a statement piece in its own right when worn without the engagement ring

What to expect when buying — the Fenora process

Buying a wedding ring at Fenora follows the same process as the engagement ring — 100% online, free consultation with Yash Chandpara, made to order in 10–12 working days.

  • 01
    Book a free consultation
Tell Yash Chandpara what you are looking for — or tell him you have no idea and start from there. Both are equally valid starting points.
  • 02
    Confirm the engagement ring
Yash Chandpara needs to see the engagement ring (or know its details) to advise on the right pairing — width, curvature, metal match.
  • 03
    Explore options on screen
Yash Chandpara shows wedding band options on screen alongside the engagement ring profile. The pairing is assessed visually before any decision is made.
  • 04
    Confirm and order
Once the style, metal, width and profile are confirmed, the order is placed. 10–12 working days to delivery.
  • 05
    One complimentary resize included
One free resize within 60 days of delivery. Wedding bands, like engagement rings, come with the full Fenora aftercare programme.

Beginner questions — answered

Every question a first-time wedding ring buyer asks.

Do both partners need to buy from the same place?
No — each partner chooses their own ring independently. Buying from the same place makes metal matching easier but is not required.
Is there a tradition about who pays for the wedding rings?
Traditions vary enormously. The most common modern approach is for couples to choose and pay for each other's rings. Some couples split the cost. Some each pay for their own. There is no universal rule.
What if I change my mind after ordering?
Contact Yash Chandpara immediately. Changes can typically be made within 24 hours of ordering, before crafting has begun. After that, significant changes are not possible.
Should I buy the wedding ring before or after the engagement ring?
Ideally at the same time as the engagement ring, or at least after confirming the engagement ring metal and style so the wedding band can be chosen to pair correctly.
Can a wedding ring have coloured gemstones instead of diamonds?
Yes. Lab grown coloured stones — sapphires, rubies, emeralds — can be used in wedding bands at Fenora. Discuss with Yash Chandpara during the consultation.
