Are lab grown diamonds as good as real diamonds?

Yes — on every measurable quality dimension. The same hardness, the same optical properties, the same IGI grading, the same durability. Lab grown diamonds differ from mined only in origin and price. This guide gives the complete, honest assessment.

01

The question behind the question

"As good as real" contains an assumption worth examining: the assumption that mined diamonds are the reference standard of "real" and lab grown are measured against them. A more accurate framing is that both are diamonds — the same material — and the comparison is about which origin better serves a specific buyer's priorities.

With that reframing: lab grown diamonds are as good as mined diamonds on every quality measure. They are the same material. The IGI measures them identically. They have the same hardness, the same optical properties and the same permanence. The differences are in origin, price and resale value — not in quality.

“As good as? The question assumes mined is the benchmark. A better question is: are they the same material? Yes. Are they graded by the same standards? Yes. Are the quality grades directly comparable? Yes.”

Where lab grown exceeds mined

Better on these dimensions
  • Price per quality grade — identical quality costs 60–80% less. The budget goes further
  • Environmental footprint — laboratory grown, no land excavation, traceable origin
  • Consistency of supply — grown to specification. Specific qualities available reliably
  • Access to top grades — D colour, Flawless, Excellent cut is accessible in lab grown at prices that would buy far lower quality in mined
04

Where mined has an advantage

Better on these dimensions
  • Geological origin — if the fact that a stone formed underground over billions of years matters to the buyer, only mined provides this
  • Resale value — mined diamonds retain more resale value than lab grown. Neither is a good investment at retail prices, but mined is relatively better
  • Certain rare natural colours — natural fancy coloured diamonds (Argyle pink, natural blue) are different stones from lab grown coloured diamonds and are only available as mined

Common questions

Will my lab grown diamond look different to a mined diamond in a ring?
No visible difference in normal conditions. The same cut, colour and clarity grades produce visually identical results in a ring setting. A trained gemologist with spectrographic equipment can identify the origin in a laboratory — but in a ring on a hand, there is no visible difference.
Do jewellers treat lab grown and mined rings differently for repair or resizing?
No. The jeweller works with the gold or platinum setting and the diamond — the material is the same. Resizing, prong re-tipping and cleaning are performed identically.
Is a lab grown diamond a good engagement ring choice?
Yes — for buyers who value quality, value and ethical sourcing. The only situation where mined may be preferred is when the geological origin of the stone carries specific personal meaning.
